Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah announced the launch of the Sahakar Taxi, a national taxi service based on the cooperative model, while addressing an event in Mumbai celebrating the International Year of Cooperatives 2025.
Speaking at the event, Shah said, “Under this model, taxi drivers will not just be workers but co-owners of the Sahakar Taxi service. The profits generated will be directly transferred to their bank accounts.”
He emphasized that “Every taxi driver will not just be connected to the service, but will be the owner of the cooperative taxi. This is the power of the cooperative model.”
The initiative aims to economically empower drivers, reduce dependency on aggregator platforms, and ensure fair profit sharing. By becoming cooperative members and shareholders, drivers will gain ownership rights and long-term security.
Shah also highlighted that Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) can be engaged with cooperative taxi services, helping them expand outreach, provide localized financial services, and strengthen the rural-urban cooperative ecosystem.
