PACS being prepared to use AI: Minister in LS

In the Lok Sabha, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah highlighted the scope of emerging technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and precision agriculture tools into the PACS computerisation project, depending on need and availability.

He further added that the Government is committed to formulating a long-term strategy to integrate Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) as ‘multi-service hubs’, enabling them to provide a wide range of services to rural communities under one roof.

Under the ‘Sahakar Se Samriddhi’ vision, the Ministry of Cooperation aims to expand the number of PACS to two lakh units, ensuring at least one PACS in every panchayat. These units will function as single-window service centers for farmers and rural households, facilitating access to credit and other essential services.

To support this transformation, the government has introduced model bye-laws and legal reforms, allowing PACS to undertake over 25 different business activities. This will enable them to evolve into comprehensive rural economic units.

The PACS computerisation programme includes the deployment of ERP software, real-time data systems, and the integration of advanced technologies like AI, drones, and IoT. This initiative will boost their efficiency and multifunctionality, positioning PACS as key institutions for financial inclusion, agri-services, welfare delivery, and digital governance in rural India.
