Nepal govt reimburses Rs 1.51 bn to depositors of troubled co-ops

The government of Nepal has reimbursed over Rs 1.51 billion to depositors of troubled cooperatives, according to data from the Problematic Cooperatives Management Committee. Minister Balaram Adhikari shared that partial payments were made to affected depositors.

The National Campaign for Protection of Cooperative Depositors (NCPCD) recently gave a deadline of November 20 for full repayment, threatening further protests if the agreement was not honored. However, Committee Member Secretary Keshav Prasad Paudel clarified that the committee’s refund process is separate from the NCPCD agreement, though the group’s pressure influenced progress.

Depositors with less than Rs100,000 have been fully reimbursed, while 438 larger depositors will receive funds soon. Officials confirmed the remaining savings would be returned through asset liquidation. NCPCD leaders, however, questioned the government’s claims, calling for verification from recipients.
