The much-awaited National Cooperative Policy draft has been finalized and is set to be launched soon. The policy serves as a roadmap for realizing the government’s vision of ‘Sahakar Se Samriddhi’ (Prosperity through Cooperation). It is worth noting that the last such policy was issued in 2002.
To develop a comprehensive and inclusive framework, the government had constituted a National Level Committee on September 2, 2022, under the chairmanship of Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu.
The committee comprised experts from the cooperative sector, representatives from national, state, district, and primary-level cooperative societies, along with officials from the Ministry of Cooperation and other central ministries.
As part of the policy formulation process, the committee conducted 17 meetings and organized four regional workshops across the country to gather feedback and suggestions from stakeholders. Valuable inputs received from cooperative societies, state governments, and industry experts have been carefully incorporated into the draft.
The new National Cooperative Policy aims to unlock the full potential of India’s vast cooperative network by offering a structured, forward-looking framework to guide its future growth, professionalization, and sustainability.
