Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, in a written reply to the Lok Sabha, informed that the Government has approved a plan to create warehouses, custom hiring centers, primary processing units, and other agri-infrastructure at the PACS level. This will be implemented through convergence of schemes like AIF, AMI, SMAM, and PMFME.
The initiative, with NAFED and NCCF playing a key role, aims to reduce food grain wastage, lower transportation costs, and help farmers get better prices, while meeting agricultural needs locally. Under the pilot, godowns in 11 PACS across 11 States have been completed.
Under the extended pilot, over 500 PACS nationwide have been identified for godown construction. Currently, NAFED, NCCF, and State Food Departments have provided hiring assurances for 220 PACS, construction has started in 134 PACS, and completed in 85 PACS (Rajasthan-70, Maharashtra-15).
This ambitious project establishes a robust, decentralized grain storage network with NAFED and NCCF at the forefront in strengthening the cooperative sector.
