Mumbai: Department of Co-op Societies under lens

Free Press Journal quotes social workers saying the Department of Cooperative Societies in Mumbai is corrupt and indulges in irregularities with impunity. The registrars and their teams harass housing societies in more ways than one.

In February, the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) arrested Bandra West ward’s deputy registrar of co-operative societies and his assistant for accepting a bribe of Rs 1 lakh. Again in December 2020, an official from P-ward (Kandivali East) was arrested.

In the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, there are 50,000 co-operative housing societies and counting as the population in the city keeps rising.
