During a discussion in Lok Sabha on Tuesday, Union Minister of State for Cooperation, Muralidhar Mohol, highlighted the initiatives undertaken to strengthen the cooperative sector in Uttar Pradesh.
Responding to Aligarh MP Shri Satish Kumar Gautam’s query on BBSSL, Mohol stated that over 4,200 cooperative societies in UP are now members of BBSSL, producing and distributing high-quality seeds under the ‘Bharat Beej’ brand.
He elaborated that BBSSL is actively involved in supplying seeds of crops like peanuts, wheat, lentils, and chickpeas directly to farmers, in coordination with the Uttar Pradesh Agricultural Department.
Nationally, BBSSL has 33,750 member societies across 34 states and union territories, and has sold seeds worth approximately Rs 154 crore.
Looking ahead, Mohol said BBSSL aims to become one of the top five seed producers globally by 2035, targeting a turnover of around Rs 25,000 crore. The initiative forms part of the government’s broader strategy to empower cooperatives, boost rural employment, and strengthen the agricultural economy.
