The Ministry of Cooperation conducted a comprehensive review of the ongoing construction of warehouses under the World’s Largest Grain Storage Plan in the cooperative sector. The review was led by Secretary Dr. Ashish Kumar Bhutani, with participation from key officials including Dr. Heera Lal, Commissioner and Registrar, and the Additional Commissioner and Registrar (Administration) of Uttar Pradesh.
Initiated as a pilot project across 11 Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS) in 11 states, the plan aims to establish decentralized storage infrastructure to enhance food security and support farmers.
The pilot phase has been completed, and the initiative is now expanding to an additional 500 PACS nationwide. The project leverages existing government schemes such as the Agriculture Infrastructure Fund (AIF) and Agricultural Marketing Infrastructure Scheme (AMI) to develop facilities including warehouses, custom hiring centers, processing units, and fair price shops .
This ambitious plan is expected to significantly reduce post-harvest losses, provide farmers with better storage options, and improve their access to markets, thereby contributing to the overall growth of the agricultural sector.
