Meeting charts long-term role of Beej Anusandhan Kendra

A forward-looking meeting was held with Beej Anusandhan Kendra, ICRISAT, and Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited to deliberate on the functioning and long-term role of Beej Anusandhan Kendra as a key institution in India’s seed ecosystem.

The discussions focused on strengthening research and development around traditional and non-GM seeds, with particular emphasis on gene conservation, seed enhancement, and research-led productivity improvements. Participants underlined the importance of preserving indigenous seed diversity while improving quality and resilience to meet evolving agricultural and climatic challenges.

Beej Anusandhan Kendra is envisioned as a national cooperative asset that can support farmers with access to world-class quality seeds. By combining scientific research with cooperative principles, the institution aims to bridge the gap between innovation and grassroots farming needs.

The meeting also highlighted the role of cooperative-led research in ensuring seed self-reliance and safeguarding India’s seed sovereignty. Through sustained collaboration with research institutions and cooperative organisations, Beej Anusandhan Kendra is expected to contribute to higher farm productivity and long-term sustainability in Indian agriculture.
