The apex body of fisheries co-ops in the state of Kerala Matsyafed is on the growth path. Matsyafed will build more chill rooms and ice plants to help fishermen preserve their fish catch to be able to get good prices, reports the daily the Hindu.
Sources close to Matsyafed say such facilities will help fishermen improve their economic conditions. It is said the catch being perishable, fishermen are often at the mercy of the market.
A major objective of the fisheries cooperative is to ensure the right of first sale of catch to the producer fishermen and check their exploitation by auctioneers or middlemen.
