The Madras High Court ruled that cooperative societies are not ‘public authorities’ under the RTI Act of 2005, exempting them from its obligations, media reports say.
This decision followed a challenge by Madhanam Primary Agricultural Cooperative Credit Society against a Tamil Nadu Information Commission order demanding loan detail disclosure.
The court referenced earlier judgments affirming that such societies, as autonomous bodies, do not perform public functions.
