A news item detailing how Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank failed to give money to a patient has hogged media headlines and has done damage to the already tarnished image of co-op banking.
Friends and relatives of a woman who died at a hospital in Thrissur held a demonstration in front of the Karuvannur Service Cooperative Bank alleging the bank did not pay money for her treatment even though the family had ?28 lakh in deposit in the bank.
The deceased woman’s family had approached the bank several times for money but to no avail. The kin along with the local residents sat with the dead body in front of the bank blocking the road.
It is said it is a murder committed by the CPI[M] as the bank is led by the party.Sources say the CPI[M] has yet to initiate action against the bank.
Opposition Congress and BJP joined the protest.
