Japan’s National Diet has passed a resolution promoting cooperatives in line with the UN International Year of Cooperatives.
Introduced by Senator Kawada Ryuhei, the resolution urges the government to align with UN and ILO guidelines and the 1995 ICA Statement on Cooperative Identity.
It highlights co-ops’ role in achieving the SDGs, revitalizing regional ties, and building sustainable communities. Passed with 227 votes in favor, it calls for stronger support for co-ops as key contributors to the national economy and society.
Minister Junko Mihara affirmed the government’s commitment to advancing cooperative-led social and economic development.
