With less than two months to go before a critical United Nations climate conference in Paris, IFFCO MD Dr U S Awasthi has cautioned against the perils of worsening climate back home in India. He is concerned more with the conservation of Himalayan Eco System.
Quoting the figure of 50 percent districts of the country which are under drought Awasthi tweeted “ 4#India Global warming & climate change has far reaching effect. 50%districts reeling under drought conserving Himalayan eco system challenging.”
Quoting India’s support the US daily The Wall Street Journal said “As the last major economy to submit a target for a global climate pact, India is pledging to reduce the intensity of its carbon-dioxide emissions and boost the share of electricity produced from sources other than fossil fuels to 40% by 2030.
The world’s third-largest CO2 emitter filed its climate-action plan to the Germany-based United Nations climate secretariat late Thursday, the deadline for pledges before a December conference in Paris, where governments aim to adopt a landmark deal to fight climate change.
In a 38-page submission citing Mahatma Gandhi, the Indian government said it would slash the rate of emissions relative to gross domestic product by 33%-35% by 2030 from 2005 levels.
India’s announcement of a long-term plan to combat greenhouse gas emissions brings on board all the world’s major economies — including big polluters such as the United States, China, the European Union and Brazil — with national pledges to address climate change.
December Paris meeting may prove crucial for the health and future of the planet.
