Haryana: Co-op sugar mills in deep debt

A report from Tribune says sugarcane cultivation in Haryana is likely to go through a rough patch if sugar mills continue to delay their payment to cane growers. The latter have fallen on evil days in that they are not able to carry out even their most basic financial obligations.

However, authorities are quoted claiming they have taken necessary steps to ensure sugarcane farmers are paid their dues as soon as possible.

The cooperative sugar mills have also taken loan of Rs 145.33 crore against the Excise Duty from the Cooperative Bank under the Central government scheme.

All 11 cooperative sugar mills including a couple of private mills faced losses in the range of Rs 20 crore to Rs 79 crore during 2014-15 and the authorities have estimated losses in the range of Rs 10 crore to Rs 63 crore during 2015-16.
