Nearly half of the 1,900 cooperatives under Kathmandu Metropolitan City have failed to submit mandatory annual reports, raising concerns over transparency, Nepal’s media reports.
According to the Cooperatives Department, only 723 institutions are regular in compliance. Department chief Dhruba Kumar Kafle said repeated reminders have gone unheeded, with some entities out of contact and others avoiding scrutiny due to ongoing investigations or alleged illegal lending.
The Metropolis has warned of legal action against persistent defaulters, signalling a crackdown on non-compliant cooperatives and deeper issues within the sector.
