The Times of India reports that the Gujarat High Court is set to decide whether a foreign national can legally be a member or serve on the managing committee of an Indian cooperative society.
The case involves a sugar cooperative in Gandevi, where Ranjit Patel, an OCI cardholder resident in the U.S., currently holds a committee position, prompting a challenge from a society member who argues that only Indian citizens should fill such roles.
Lower authorities earlier found no explicit legal bar under the Gujarat Cooperative Societies Act, but the petitioner says clearer rules are needed to protect local interests.
