Govt gets tough with loan-defaulting sugar co-ops

Hindu quotes a Maharashtra govt. official saying the state government has sent notices to cooperative sugar mills in the State, which have not paid loans of over Rs. 1,200 crore.

Sources said non-payment of loans by cooperative sugar mills have pushed several DCCs into a serious financial crisis. The erring sugar mills are controlled by Congress and NCP leaders, sources added.

The state govt. has asked the cooperative department to come up with a White Paper, listing the loans taken by these cooperative institutions and the amounts repaid so far.

However, some opposition leaders have savaged the decision to publish the White Paper saying this only shows that the BJP govt. has failed on all fronts.
