First GI-Tagged Salem Sago Export to Canada: APEDA

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) facilitated the export of 0.5 MT of GI-tagged Salem Sago from Tamil Nadu to Canada, marking the first direct overseas shipment by GI Authorised User SAGOSERVE since the product received its Geographical Indication tag in March 2023.

Salem, India’s hub for tapioca sago and starch, sustains thousands of farmers, including tribal cultivators. The GI registration, secured by SAGOSERVE under the Tamil Nadu government, covers 334 member-manufacturers and supports quality, warehousing and cultivation standards.

Earlier routed through traders, this direct export improves price realisation for producers. An export promotion programme was also held in Salem to explore new global markets, aligning with APEDA’s push to expand GI-based agri exports.
