Election deadline extended to June, 2015

voting lineWith the BJP govt in the saddle, good days seem to have come for the cooperative sector in Maharashtra. The govt has given the go ahead for holding elections to thousands of cooperative bodies especially the big ones across the state latest by June 2015.

The state cooperative society election authority (SCSEA) had urged the govt to extend the deadline till June 2015 as it was busy conducting elections of smaller cooperative societies.

It needs to be mentioned that cooperative bodies in Maharashtra have been put into particular groups based on the criteria of number and turnover. There are 138 A type, 3,884 B type societies and the rest are smaller societies including C and D types.

Sources say with the change made in the Maharashtra cooperative societies Act 1960, cooperative elections have been made compulsory and this is expected to put a period to misuse of cooperatives by politicians and powerful vested interests.
