The Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank has stirred debate by introducing a new Spouse Employment Ban Policy, prohibiting both husband and wife from working in the bank simultaneously, according to a report in a local Marathi daily.
The bank has defended the move, citing the need to prevent conflicts of interest, breaches of confidentiality, and potential misconduct. However, the decision has sparked widespread discussion and unease within the banking sector.
Under the new rules, if two employees marry, they must immediately inform the HR department. Within 60 days of marriage, one spouse will be required to resign.
If a voluntary decision is not made, the bank will decide which spouse continues in service. In recruitment, if a candidate’s spouse already works in the bank, the applicant will be deemed ineligible. Future job postings will clearly state that only one spouse may be employed at a time.
The policy also impacts existing employees. For House Rent Allowance (HRA), only the spouse with the higher entitlement will receive it. Both spouses can claim HRA only if they live in different cities and provide proof. Mumbai, Thane, Navi Mumbai, and Panvel will be treated as one city.
The move has created confusion and resentment among employees, with unions expected to take a stand in the coming days.
