Co-ops not state-run-bodies : Court

A division bench of the Gujarat High Court has ruled that Election Commission has no authority to ”requisite the staff of a district cooperative bank” for election works as cooperative banks do not qualify as state-run bodies.

The section 159[2] of the representation of people Act 1951 does not offer any indication in this regard , the court felt.

The court was responding to a petition filed by office-bearers of a district cooperative bank.
