In a significant push towards sustainable coastal development, the Department of Fisheries, Government of India, has highlighted the growing success of seaweed farming as a viable livelihood option under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana.
According to a recent update shared on the department’s official Facebook page, the Mahavir Fisheries Cooperative Society at Mangrol Port has demonstrated an impressive scale-up in operations. The cooperative expanded its seaweed cultivation from 50 to 350 rafts, achieving a harvest of nearly 10,000 kg in its initial cycle.
Seaweed farming is emerging as a key avenue for livelihood diversification among coastal communities, offering sustainable income opportunities while supporting environmental conservation. The initiative also aligns with India’s broader vision of strengthening the blue economy.
