Widely regarded as one of the principal architects of modern cooperative law in India, Rama Reddy Mamidi has been honoured with the prestigious Padma Shri for his outstanding contribution to the cooperative movement and rural development.

Mamidi played a pivotal role in drafting the landmark Andhra Pradesh Mutually Aided Cooperative Societies Act, 1995, a legislation that transformed the cooperative sector by promoting autonomy, democratic governance and member participation. The Act is widely viewed as a model for cooperative reforms across the country.

Over the years, he has helped establish as many as 585 Thrift and Credit Societies, enabling thousands of rural families to access savings and credit services. His efforts have significantly strengthened grassroots financial inclusion and community-led development.

Mamidi is also credited with promoting India’s first all-women-owned dairy cooperative at Mulukanoor, creating new opportunities for women’s economic empowerment and leadership in the dairy sector.

His Padma Shri recognition is being hailed as a tribute to a lifetime dedicated to strengthening India’s cooperative ecosystem and empowering rural communities through self-reliant institutions.
