Co-op Day at UN Headquarters today

United Nations is celebrating International Cooperative Day today on July 11. Its media arm Web TV would broadcast the live show at 1.15 pm announced ICA in a tweet. “Watch #Coops Day event at #UNHQ 1:15pm”, it read.

It was in 1992 that the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed the Saturday of the first week of  July to be celebrated as the International Day of Cooperatives by a UN resolution.

Cooperators of all hues and of all countries–from Africa to America spend this day in a special way.

In a press release ICA said “The International Co-operative Alliance invites cooperators from all around the world to join the international campaign #coopsday. You can visit the website www.coopsday.coop to find useful information and resources to make the best of this day.”

The International Day aims to strengthen and extend partnerships between the international cooperative movement and other actors, including governments, at local, national and international levels.

The theme for the year 2016 International Day of Cooperatives is “Co-operatives: The power to Act for a Sustainable Future”. The theme was chosen to emphasize the co-operative contribution to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to achieve three extra ordinary things viz. End extreme poverty, fight inequality, fix climate change – over the next 15 years.
