Union Agriculture, Farmers’ Welfare and Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, visited the ICAR-Directorate of Groundnut Research in Junagadh, Gujarat, on Saturday, where he interacted with farmers and self-help group (SHG) women known as “Lakhpati Didis.”
During his visit, Chouhan released a compilation of 50 inspiring stories of these women who have achieved annual incomes of over ?10 lakh through the National Rural Livelihood Mission (NRLM). He also unveiled the institute’s Annual Report for 2024.
Extending Raksha Bandhan wishes to the Lakhpati Didis, the Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to women’s economic empowerment through SHGs. “Every woman must become self-reliant and independent,” he said, adding that 1.5 crore women have already become Lakhpati Didis and the goal of reaching 2 crore by August 15 is within sight.
Praising their determination, Chouhan said SHG women are challenging gender stereotypes and becoming agents of social change. “This is Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision—empowering more women to become active participants in the economy,” he stated.
He stressed that with the right skill training, credit access, and infrastructure, rural women can make a significant national and global impact. “Lakhpati Didis are showcasing the strength of local products across the world,” he noted.
Encouraging the women to continue their journey with courage, Chouhan said that the Prime Minister is fully backing their efforts. He also hinted at new plans to increase women’s role in industry, describing them as key contributors to building a developed India.
