In a major initiative to empower farmers and bolster rural infrastructure, the Bihar Government has constructed 6,158 godowns under its Warehouse Construction Scheme, primarily through Primary Agricultural Credit Societies (PACS), local media outlets report.
Out of 6,994 approved warehouses, the majority are now operational, adding a vital 16.91 lakh MT of storage capacity across the state. PACS, the foundational tier of India’s co-operative credit system, play a pivotal role by offering direct loans to farmers and supporting agri-trade.
These godowns of 200, 500, and 1,000 MT capacities, are tailored to local needs and built with a 50:50 funding model, combining government grants and low-interest loans.
Construction quality is ensured through rigorous monitoring. This effort not only reduces post-harvest losses but also strengthens PACS as critical rural economic enablers.
