Maulana Tauqeer Raza, currently lodged in Fatehgarh Central Jail over the September 26 Bareilly violence, has been flagged as a long-time loan defaulter of a local cooperative society.
Officials said he borrowed Rs 5,055 from the Sadhan Sahkari Samiti in Rasulpur Puthi village before 1997 to buy fertiliser. With interest and penalties, the amount has grown to Rs 28,346.
Committee secretary Hridayesh Kumar Singh said Raza’s name surfaced during a routine review of dues.
Despite repeated notices over the years, no repayment was made and his family later sold their land and left the village. Budaun District Magistrate Avanish Rai said recovery proceedings will be initiated soon.
