On International Literacy Day IFFCO MD Dr U S Awasthi has emphasized the role of education in transforming one’s life and reminded his followers on social media of its empowering nature.
MD has also exhorted the people to educate at least one person so that literacy increases. He said“Each One Teach One”. International Literacy Day falls on 8th September.
His tweet read “Best wishes to everyone on #International Literacy Day. The power of #literacy is Supreme & biggest tool of empowerment. #Each One Teach One”.
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, on the eve of the International Literacy Day, emphasized “Literacy stands at heart of the 2030 Agenda,” and said
“It is a foundation for human rights, gender equality, and sustainable societies. It is essential to all our efforts to end extreme poverty and promote well-being for all people. That is why the Sustainable Development Goals aim for universal access to quality education and learning opportunities throughout people’s lives.”
But the latest Unesco report says “the country needs fundamental changes in the education system if it wants to meet the 2030 sustainable development goals”, quotes First post.
While literacy rate has gone up from 12 percent at the time of Independence to 74 per cent in 2011 the level is well below the world average literacy count of 84 percent and India currently has the largest illiterate population in the world.
Kerala is the most literate state in India, with 93.91 percent literacy count while Bihar is the least literate state with a literacy count of 63.82 percent.
