In a closely watched contest seen as a prestige battle, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar won his seat in the Malegaon Cooperative Sugar Mill election on Tuesday.
Held on Sunday, the poll involved 19,549 Group ‘A’ voters (sugarcane cultivators) and 102 Group ‘B’ voters (representatives of affiliated cooperative bodies).
While counting continued for the 21-member board, Pawar secured a decisive victory in the Group ‘B’ category, polling 91 of 101 votes, defeating his rival who managed just 10.
The result strengthens Pawar’s hold over the influential sugar cooperative in his Baramati stronghold.
