India has 1,330 functional Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) and 340 District Central Cooperative Banks (DCCBs) operating across states and Union Territories, according to the National Cooperative Database (NCD), reflecting the strong presence of the cooperative banking structure in the country.
Replying to a query in the Lok Sabha, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah said that data as of March 1, 2026 shows Maharashtra leading the country with 434 Urban Cooperative Banks, followed by Karnataka with 237 and Gujarat with 203, highlighting the dominance of western and southern states in the urban cooperative banking sector. Tamil Nadu (102) and Uttar Pradesh (51) also have a significant number of UCBs.
In the cooperative credit structure, 340 District Central Cooperative Banks and 34 State Cooperative Banks are operational nationwide, ensuring credit flow to farmers and rural institutions through the cooperative network.
The database also records 526 Primary Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Banks (PCARDBs) and 14 State Cooperative Agriculture and Rural Development Banks (SCARDBs), which play a key role in providing long-term agricultural credit.
Additionally, 69 Multi-State Cooperative Society (MSCS) Banks are functioning across the country.
The figures underline the extensive reach of the cooperative banking ecosystem in supporting both rural and urban financial needs.
