G Rama Moorthy, director of the apex body of UCBs and Credit Societies Nafcub died at the age of 82 after a long illness on Monday morning. He was in Kamineni Hospital for the last three days.
Moorthy was associated with the cooperative movement for many decades and was associated with Nafcub for a long time. He was also the founder and Chairman of Bhavana Rishi Co-operative Urban Bank.
He was the Chairman of Andhra Pradesh State Cooperative Urban Banks Federation Ltd (till division of State) and Honorary Chairman, Telangana State Cooperative Urban Banks Federation Ltd. Moorthy was Member, State Government Expert Committee on Co-op Urban Banks, and Member, Reserve Bank’s Standing Advisory Committee for UCBs, Mumbai.
His educational qualifications were, M.A. in Economics, M.A. in Political Science, Bachelor of Laws (B, L), Post Graduate Diploma in Alternative Dispute Resolution (PGADR), Short term Diploma in negotiating rights from London.
Moorthy served the government of Andhra Pradesh for 21 years and retired as Junior Accounts Officer. Moorthy headed several independent trade unions. He had also served as General Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) but resigned. He got the Lifetime achievement award in Co-operative Banking.
As soon as the news of his demise broke, Cooperative leaders lost no time in condoling the death of Moorthy. Sahakar Bharati’s founder member, Satish Marathe wrote on Facebook, “Sahakar Bharati condoles the passing away of Sh G Rama Moorthy. UCBs have lost a forward-looking leader. May his soul attain Sadgati”.
Nafcub President Jyotindra Mehta wrote, “We have lost a true cooperator. A knowledgeable person. Heavy loss to Nafcub and for me as he was my friend, philosopher and guide. May his soul rest in peace”.
The Andhra Pradesh State Cooperative Urban Banks and Credit Societies Federation’s condolence message read, “We express our deep condolences to the bereaved family of Late Shri G Rama Moorthy on his sudden demise. We also express our grief to the President and Directors of the Telangana Cooperative Urban Bank Federation”, read the press note.
“Shri Moorthy was a veteran cooperator. As the Nafcub senior director and as a member of AP & Telangana TAFCUB he showed concern for the well-being of UCBs across the country. His exit has proven to be a blow to the cooperative sector”, it added.
Indian Cooperative also joins others in paying tributes to the departed soul.
