Maharashtra’s Kalyan Janata Sahakari Bank Managing Director Atul Khirwadkar has brought laurels to the cooperative sector by securing a berth on the board of Indian Banks’ Association (IBA).
The election of the board of directors was held on Thursday. The tenure of the Board for each director is for three years, as is the case in Rajya Sabha. The board of IBA consists of more than 25 members but the elections were held for 10 seats only on Thursday.
Reacting to the development, Khirwadkar wrote to Indian Cooperative, “I’m happy to inform you that I have been elected unopposed to the Managing Committee of premier Banking organisation of Banks in India, that is Indian Banks Association”.
“I am extremely grateful to Shri Satishji Marathe RBI Director, Shri Sunil Sathe MD TJSB Bank, Mr Sixto Fargose, Acting MD, Bassein Catholic bank, Shri Subhashji Godbole, MD Nagpur Nagrik bank, Shri Vinod Dadlani, Kalupur Bank. And last but not the least, Members of the Board of Kalyan Janata Bank”, he added.
An emotional Khirwadkar further said, “All of them played a key role and I was indeed blessed by many. Shall continue to work for the betterment of the UCB sector in the country with given abilities. Thank you all so much”.
There are three directors from the cooperative sector on the board of IBA, out of which one director namely Subhash W Godbole CEO, Nagpur Nagarik Sahakari Bank’s tenure is over. The elections for one seat from the cooperative sector was held and for this seat Godbole and Khirwadkar had filed their nomination papers but for the sake of Kalyan Janata Sahakari Bank MD, he (Godbole) withdrew his name.
The other directors from the co-operative sector on the board of IBA include Vinod G Dadlani, Kalupur Commercial Cooperative Bank and Arti Patil, Saraswat Co-op. Bank Ltd.
There were four nominations from public sector member banks against four vacancies. A S Rajeev, Bank of Maharashtra, Shanti Lal Jain Indian Bank, Soma Sankara Prasad, UCO Bank and Ms. A Manimekhalai, Union Bank of India won the election unopposed.
Whereas, from Foreign Sector Member Banks two nominations for two vacancies were filed and Madhav Nair, Mashreq Bank PSC and Gaurav Gupta, Qatar National Bank were declared elected.
The IBA- the apex body of all banks in the country was set up in 1946 to work proactively for the growth of a healthy, professional and forward-looking banking body.
The IBA represents 237 banking companies in the country. Forty UCBs are ordinary and 26 are associate members for the cooperative banking sector.
