In a notable example of cooperative-led innovation, the Lambra Kangri Cooperative Society in Punjab’s Lambra Kangri has established a biogas plant that is supplying clean cooking gas to nearly 50 households through a village-wide pipeline network.

The society has implemented a unique distribution model by laying gas pipelines on poles across the village, ensuring doorstep delivery of biogas to residents. Any villager can avail a connection by depositing a security amount with the cooperative society.

The project has provided an affordable and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional cooking fuels while promoting the use of renewable energy in rural areas. The biogas is produced from locally available organic waste, helping improve waste management and reduce pollution.

Set up with the support of villagers and government assistance, the initiative highlights the role cooperatives can play in advancing sustainable development.

The success of the project has turned Lambra Kangri into a model for rural clean-energy adoption, with the cooperative demonstrating how community participation and innovative thinking can bring tangible benefits to village households.
