The fisheries sector is witnessing a major transformation under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), with the National Agricultural Cooperative Marketing Federation of India (NAFED) playing a key role in strengthening Fish Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs) across the country.
According to the latest updates, FFPOs supported under the initiative have achieved an average turnover exceeding Rs 22 lakh, reflecting the growing commercial viability of community-based fish enterprises.
NAFED has also facilitated 100 per cent digital enablement of FFPOs by onboarding them onto platforms and regulatory systems such as GST, FSSAI and ONDC, helping fishermen access formal markets and online trade channels.
The initiative has particularly encouraged women-led entrepreneurship through value-added products including fish pickles and dried fish, generating additional rural livelihoods.
To strengthen operational and business capabilities, more than 480 training and capacity-building programmes have been conducted for fish farmers, cooperatives and producer groups across various states.
