The International Cooperative Alliance (ICA) on May 4 unveiled the theme for the 2026 International Day of Cooperatives (CoopsDay) as “Cooperatives for a Peaceful World,” placing the spotlight on the sector’s growing role in fostering social cohesion, dialogue and stability in an increasingly divided global landscape.
The announcement comes two months ahead of the annual observance, which will be marked on July 4, 2026, by cooperatives and partner institutions across the world.
The theme underscores the cooperative model’s unique capacity to act as a unifying force, bringing together individuals and communities through shared ownership, democratic participation and collective benefit.
At a time when many regions are grappling with conflict, rising inequality, economic uncertainty and declining public trust, the global cooperative movement is positioning itself as a key contributor to peacebuilding efforts by strengthening local economies and creating inclusive spaces for engagement.
Celebrated since 1923 and formally recognised by the United Nations in 1995, CoopsDay aims to raise awareness about the contributions of cooperatives to sustainable development, economic resilience and social justice.
The 2026 observance will mark the 104th International Cooperative Day and the 32nd UN International Day of Cooperatives, reflecting more than a century of cooperative action rooted in people-centric values.
The 2026 theme also aligns with the ICA Global Conference scheduled to be held in Panama in September under the banner “Building Bridges: Cooperative Contributions for a Peaceful World.”
The conference is expected to bring together cooperative leaders, policymakers and development experts to examine how cooperatives can bridge divides across communities, sectors and regions. Discussions will focus on strengthening resilience, rebuilding trust and promoting inclusive participation as essential pillars of peaceful societies.
The emphasis on peace is further reinforced by the 2019 ICA Declaration on Positive Peace through Cooperatives, which calls on the movement to deepen its commitment towards building inclusive and just societies. Speaking on the announcement, ICA Director General Jeroen Douglas highlighted that cooperatives play a critical role not only in preventing conflict but in actively creating the conditions necessary for lasting peace.
He noted that through their work across sectors, cooperatives help expand access to essential services, promote democratic governance and foster solidarity among communities.
The theme also resonates strongly with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 16, which focuses on peace, justice and strong institutions. In line with this, the ICA and the Committee for the Promotion and Advancement of Cooperatives (COPAC) are preparing a policy brief to highlight the role of cooperatives in advancing peace as part of the International Year of Cooperatives 2025 (IYC2025) SDG policy series.
COPAC brings together several key international organisations, including the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs, the International Labour Organization, the Food and Agriculture Organization, the International Trade Centre and the United Nations Research Institute for Social Development, alongside the ICA. Together, these bodies are working to elevate the visibility of cooperatives as drivers of sustainable and peaceful development worldwide.
As preparations gather pace for CoopsDay 2026, the newly announced theme serves as both a recognition of the cooperative sector’s longstanding contributions and a renewed call to action for building bridges in a fractured world. With their emphasis on inclusivity, equity and shared prosperity, cooperatives are increasingly being seen as vital institutions in shaping a more peaceful and resilient global future.
