In a move aimed at preserving India’s traditional crop diversity, Bharatiya Beej Sahakari Samiti Limited (BBSSL) has signed an MoU with Oryzo Riceghar Agroworld Pvt. Ltd. to promote purification, certification and large-scale production of heritage and GI-tagged rice varieties.
The partnership combines BBSSL’s extensive cooperative seed network with Oryzo’s expertise in heritage rice value chains. The initiative seeks to ensure genetic purity and quality of traditional rice, while expanding the production of certified seeds across regions.
A key focus will be on strengthening farmer livelihoods through training, field demonstrations, branding and improved market access.
The collaboration also aims to build sustainable value chains for indigenous crops, ensuring farmers receive better returns.
By integrating conservation with commercialization, the initiative is expected to safeguard India’s rich agricultural heritage while creating new income opportunities. The partnership marks a significant step toward a more resilient, farmer-centric and biodiversity-friendly seed ecosystem in the country.
