India’s fisheries sector is witnessing a surge in innovation, with over 300 start-ups emerging as key drivers of efficiency, sustainability, and value addition. Backed by government support of Rs 39,272 crore since 2015, the sector is evolving from a traditional production base into a technology-enabled ecosystem supporting livelihoods and food security.
Start-ups are leveraging advanced tools such as artificial intelligence, IoT, and blockchain to improve productivity, traceability, and supply chain efficiency. Solutions like precision aquaculture, disease prediction, smart feeding systems, and water-quality monitoring are helping farmers reduce costs and enhance yields. Innovations in biofloc systems and recirculatory aquaculture are further enabling high-density, low-resource farming.
The Department of Fisheries has also promoted cold-chain advancements, solar-powered chilling, and AI-based quality grading to minimize post-harvest losses. Drone technology is being explored for pond monitoring and live fish transport, with ICAR-Central Inland Fisheries Research Institute developing a prototype capable of carrying 100 kg over short distances.
To boost innovation, initiatives like startup conclaves, grand challenges, and incubation centres, supported by National Fisheries Development Board and ICAR institutes, are providing funding, mentorship, and industry linkages.
Officials say these efforts are building a resilient, tech-driven fisheries ecosystem poised for long-term growth.
