Uttar Pradesh has 23 operational cooperative sugar mills, with steady production and government-backed support for maintenance and upgrades, Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed the Lok Sabha in a written reply to MP Neeraj Maurya.
Key mills at Semikhera (Bareilly) and Shekhupur (Budaun) are functioning efficiently, with the Budaun unit crushing 10.46 lakh quintals of sugarcane in the 2025–26 season. The Uttar Pradesh government allocated Rs 24 crore in 2024–25 for off-season repairs, ensuring smooth operations.
The state is also planning to expand Semikhera’s capacity and set up a new refinery-based mill. However, no proposal for special financial assistance has been submitted to the Centre or National Cooperative Development Corporation.
At the national level, schemes for modernization and ethanol projects continue, while NCDC has disbursed over Rs 7,700 crore in Uttar Pradesh, supporting broader cooperative development across sectors.
