In a significant move aimed at enhancing digital credit access, the Ministry of Finance has officially permitted TransUnion CIBIL Limited to use Aadhaar-based authentication for verifying user identity on its platform.

The notification, issued on February 25, 2026, follows approval from the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology in consultation with the Unique Identification Authority of India.

Under the provisions of the Aadhaar Act and related rules, CIBIL can now conduct Aadhaar authentication using Yes/No and eKYC facilities for users accessing their credit information reports.

The government clarified that Aadhaar authentication will be strictly voluntary. Users who choose not to authenticate via Aadhaar will not be denied services and can alternatively verify their identity using PAN Card, Passport, Voter ID, Driving License, or Ration Card.

The move is expected to streamline identity verification, improve transparency, and make credit report access more seamless while maintaining safeguards around consent and user choice.
