Jammu and Kashmir has 1,662 non-functional cooperative societies, even as 8,913 cooperatives are currently operational in the Union Territory, according to official data tabled in Parliament. The information was shared by the Ministry of Cooperation in response to a starred question on measures to strengthen regulatory oversight of cooperative societies.

Data from the newly launched National Cooperative Database also shows that five cooperative societies in the UT are under liquidation, indicating gaps in governance and monitoring despite recent national-level reforms.

The disclosure comes at a time when the Centre is pushing for greater transparency and accountability through amendments to the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act and the introduction of digital oversight systems.

At the national level, the database reveals that out of 8.45 lakh cooperative societies, only 6.56 lakh are functional, while 1.39 lakh remain non-functional and 48,537 are under liquidation.
