Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah informed Parliament that an innovative app-based taxi service under the cooperative model is in the developing stage, with a pilot project likely to be launched in Delhi and Gujarat.
The initiative is being rolled out by Sahkar Taxi Cooperative Limited, a society registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002. Rooted in the principles of “Sahkar se Samridhi”, the cooperative seeks to provide a democratic and transparent alternative to traditional ride-hailing platforms.
Explaining the concept, Shah noted that a platform cooperative is a cooperatively owned and democratically governed business that uses technology to sell products or services. In this case, the cooperative will run an app-based taxi service designed to benefit both driver-members and customers, ensuring fair earnings for drivers and affordable, reliable services for commuters.
The minister emphasized that Sahkar Taxi will embody the values of cooperation, shared ownership, and accountability, positioning itself as a people-centric alternative to private operators.
