On June 8, 2025, co-operative and mutual sector leaders attended a Downing Street reception hosted by business ministers, who reaffirmed the government’s commitment to doubling the size of the sector, reports the CoopNews.
Key figures included CEOs from Co-operatives UK, Co-op Group, credit unions, and employee ownership organizations. Ministers introduced the new Business Growth Service and launched a call for evidence on co-ops and mutuals to support business growth at all stages.
Leaders emphasized the importance of diverse models like employee ownership for resilient economic growth. The event aligned with 2025 being the UN’s International Year of the Co-operative, encouraging sector members to contribute to government plans for a fairer, stronger economy focused on inclusion and renewal.
