In a significant step for rural dairy development, the newly registered Kalaw Milk Producers’ Cooperative Society under Ringhim Nampatam GPU, Mangan District, held its first official meeting on May 28.
Registered under the Sikkim Cooperative Societies Act, the meeting was attended by key officials including Ward Panchayat Passang Namgyal Lepcha, Dr. Hissay D Lepcha (JD, AH&VS & MD, North Dairy Milk Union), Assistant Registrar of Cooperative Societies Pema Wangchuk Bhutia, and other cooperative officials.
The gathering aimed to chart the future course of the cooperative. ARCS Bhutia highlighted the duties of the Board of Directors (BoD) and urged members to uphold transparency and good governance. Cooperative Inspectors guided members on maintaining mandatory records such as cash books and share registers.
A new 5-member BoD was elected, with Khichung Lepcha as President and Pemla Lepcha as Secretary. The society resolved to deposit the TDR amount in its bank account and submit a 25-year land agreement for the milk collection center.
This meeting marked the formal beginning of Kalaw’s cooperative journey, reflecting the growing strength of the cooperative movement in Sikkim’s rural dairy sector.
