During the agriculture grievance meeting in Thoothukudi, Collector K Elambahavath announced that cooperative credit societies disbursed Rs 263.5 crore in farm loans to 22,562 farmers, including Rs 194.28 crore to small and marginal farmers in 2024–25, say media reports.
Farmers voiced difficulties recovering from December 2023 flood losses. Some urged early kar paddy cultivation due to Manimutharu dam’s 85 ft water level. A plea was made to release gold pledged with a cooperative society linked to a Rs 27-crore scam.
Concerns were also raised over construction in the Thamirabarani river basin. The collector noted the district recorded 124.31 mm rainfall so far this year.
