Anand is bleeding as BM Vyas, M D of GCMMF resignation and subsequent drama are gradually eroding the  glow of Indian cooperative movement’s success story called Amul.

The Chairman of GCMMF Mr Parthi Bhatol and his team is in hurry to accept the resignation of M r Vyas, the MD.GCMMF spokesman told media that Vyas’s resignation has been accepted even before the board could meet to decide on the matter. Vyas is cautious and smart. He has refused to comment to the media on the status of his resignation as he knows that unless Board takes a decision, nothing is final.

The whole plot has actually two main actors—one is the incumbent Chairman Mr Parthi Bhatol and the second is Mr Vipul Chaudhary who is the chairman of largest union Dudhsagar of GCMMMF. Mr Chaudhary aims at Bhatol’s seat and has encircled him from all sides. Chaudhary, a former minister in Gujarat cabinet has been able to influence majority of 13 directors on board of GCMMF. The joining of congress MLA and chairman of one of the member dairies Mr Ramsinh Parmar to the Chaudhary camp has further lead to weakening of Bhatol camp.

Mr B M Vyas, MD had his extension ending on 30th November, 2010. He has sacrificed 4 months of his job by opting for a gamble. His resignation may make it easy for the new chairman to give him extension for another 5 years. Even otherwise he is said to be close to Chaudhry camp. Vyas was a choice of legendry Dr Verghese Kurian and joined GCMMF way back in 1978.Elevated to the post of Managing Director in 1994, it is true that he has helped Amul diversify in various food products. Amul is a well known brand partly because of his efforts also.

But intense backroom manipulation and desperation of political parties to control Amul has led things to sorry state. A company of Rs 8000 crores, 27 lakh societies and nearly one crore people is something Congress and BJP both vie to control.

Till Kurian was there, he kept politicians at bay. But his unceremonious exit in 2006 has opened the flood gates and politicians of all hue come to try their luck harming the brand of Amul bit by bit. The success of Amul inspired us to believe that if well-managed, cooperative movement can change the face of India but its slide into slimy politics makes the all the true cooperators cry in their hearts.
