Yogi govt urges bigger sale quota for UP’s sugar mills
Share on FacebookShare on Twitter

With the 2019-20 cane crushing season about to begin and last year’s payment arrears of Rs 4,700 crore, the Yogi government in Uttar Pradesh is likely to urge the India government to allow a bigger sale quota for sugar mills including cooperative sugar mills in the state, reports Business Standard.

Earlier, the Yogi govt. had given Rs 500 crore to cooperative units for paying farmers’ arrears. At present the quota is about 700,000 tonnes a month that reduces the capacity of millers to settle arrears.

Sugarcane development and sugar industries minister of Uttar Pradesh Suresh Rana has said he will soon meet the concerned central minister in this connection.

In the 2018-19 season, 119 mills in UP — 94 private, 24 co-operative and the UPSSC unit — had taken part in crushing of canes. The state’s sugar output was 11.8 million tonnes.
