The BJP government in Maharashtra has amended the Cooperative Societies Act to ensure NCP leader Ajit Pawar and over a dozen prominent politicians allegedly involved in serious irregularities in the Maharashtra State Cooperative Bank are brought to justice, reports Times of India.
Under the Act, an inquiry against a cooperative society has to be completed within two-and-a-half years of the date of the order.
Earlier in 2014 a probe had been ordered but inquiry officer failed to complete it on time. When this was brought to the CM’s notice the government decided to amend the law to complete the probe. Sources say a probe would be initiated against the enquiry officer as well.
During the budget session of the state legislature, cooperation minister moved a Bill to empower the inquiry officer to complete the probe even after the stipulated period.
