The Vice President of NCUI G H Amin who is also the Chairman of Cooperative Bank of India (COBI)met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the Parliament House on Tuesday renewing his demand for license for the apex body of cooperative banks.
Amin who was in the States for the past one month rushed to India last week when he came to know of his appointment with the Prime Minister fixed for 2nd of August. “I came on 31st evening as I was told PM would meet us at 12 pm in the Parliament House “, Amin told Indian Cooperative.
“Prime Minister heard me out patiently and promised to help”, Amin added. There is no national level apex body for co-op banks and COBI fills up this gap very well. PM appreciated the need to have a body like COBI, underlined Amin who met Prime Minister along with his brother and some top BJP leaders from Gujarat in the wake of leadership crisis arising out of Anandi Ben’s resignation.
There are primary co-op banks, district co-op banks and even state co-op banks but there is none at the national level, Amin reminded the PM in the meeting.
Top cooperative leaders including Chandra Pal Singh Yadav , Bijender Singh and Amin have been making renewed efforts to secure license for the Cooperative Bank of India (COBI). Earlier, they met two Union Ministers- Suresh Prabhu and then union state finance minister Jayant Sinha.B D Sharma former CE of NCUI and MD of COBI also accompanied them.
A cooperator to the core Suresh Prabhu telephoned Finance Secretary before us and asked him to look into our representation, Amin recounted his earlier experience. “The meeting with Jayant Sinha was also fruitful as Sinha had insisted on working out the projections of COBI, added Amin.
COBI has everything except a banking license. It holds regular Board meetings, has AGMs and it also holds an international banking conference practically every year. This year the conference is slated to take place in Germany though its Chairman G H Amin said it is not final yet.
