The latest survey carried out by the Maharashtra govt has shown that there is an urgent need to do the exercise at an all-Indian level. Maharashtra government has found that nearly 50% of the cooperative societies in Nashik district are defunct.

NCUI which is never tired of boasting that there are 6 lakh co-operatives in the country may have to revise its estimate drastically if a genuine survey is conducted. From Dr Dinesh to Chandra Pal Singh Yadav –the apex body leaders quote this number in both national and international cooperative conference.

Maharashtra government has begun to cancel these co-ops which exist only on the paper in Nashik district. The government will remove all the erring societies off the list by the end of the year, says a report by Times of India.

Of the total 10,686 co-operative societies across Nashik, 5,263 have been found defunct. The matter came to light following a survey by the co-operative department of the state government.

At present, there are a total of 10,686 co-operative societies in the district registered with the co-operative department of the state government including sugar mills and water distribution societies.

The cooperative dept had appointed a team of 170 officials to conduct a survey of co-operative societies. At the national level it should be a call of Union Agricultural Ministry which should get it done with the help of state govts and NCUI, say co-op experts.
